On Sunday May 16, 2010, over 20,000 viewers representing the Jewish community from countries around the globe are expected to commune at TorahCafe.com (www.torahcafe.com) for a webcast featuring Rabbi Shaar Yashuv Cohen, Chief Rabbi of Haifa, Israel, in a lecture titled “One Nation Under G-d.”
The holiday of Shavuot commemorates the Mt. Sinai account when the Jewish nation received the Torah, the Jewish bible, a seminal moment in the formation of Judaism. The webcast will focus on Jewish unity and how it relates to the festival of Shavuot.
Rabbi Shaar Yashuv Cohen will relate the story of his Shavuot in captivity in Amman during Israel’s War of Independence and a how his strong sense of identity, Jewish unity, and love for Torah and the Land of Israel kept him during those difficult times.
“In this era,” said Rabbi Levi Kaplan, Director of TorahCafe.com, “the potential of technology is unbelievable, and it is my hope that this simulcast will inspire Jews worldwide to strengthen their Jewish identities in honor of Shavuot, and encourage them to reach out to unite with others.”
Rabbi Shaar Yashuv Cohen also serves as director of the Ariel Institute and Chief of the Senior Council for Dialogue between the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and the Vatican and Chair of the Council for Dialogue between Judaism and Islam.
The simulcast will air on www.TorahCafe.com at 2pm EST on Sunday, May 16, 2010. A recording will be available on Torahcafe.com shortly after the event. This program is designed for people with all levels of Jewish knowledge. No prior experience or background learning is required to attend and enjoy the event.
